Rare red jade vine plant blooms in Idukki; becomes cynosure of all eyes
Thodupuzha (Idukki): Jade vine plant which is rarely found in Kerala has bloomed in Idukki. The creeper plant has bloomed in the garden of Punnoose Jacob in Thodupuzha here. Though the plant grows in the climate of Kerala, it rarely blooms here.
Jade vine is an attractive ornamental plant. The plant is native to Philippines and it normally flourishes in cold climate. There are two varieties of jade vine, one with blue flowers and other having red flowers. Among them, the red variety is very rarely found in Kerala. Its flowers are compared to a rain of fireballs.
Jade vine blooms only once in a year. The family collected its sapling from Ambalavayal in Wayanad four years ago. Though the plant is rare in Kerala, some people collect the saplings from foreign countries or agricultural research stations and grow it in their garden.
