How can goldfish grow in a garden? Here is the answer
Goldfish in aquariums is a visual treat for the viewers. So is the case of goldfish plant in gardens. Flower of the plant resembles beautiful goldfish and they bloom in bunches. Also known as dolphin plant, its scientific name is columnea gloriosa.
The leaves of the plant are thick and smooth and stem is long and round. The plant usually grows on trees or other surfaces, but is not a parasite. It absorbs water and nutrients from the surroundings.
The plant can be grown on trees, walls or flowerpots. Stem cuttings are used for propagation. Soil is not required in the flowerpot. Potting mix can be made of wood dust, leaf powder, sand and vermiculate.
Prune the plant once it starts growing. This will help it flourish well. If it is grown in hanging pots, the vines grow downwards adding to the beauty.
As the stems are fleshy, it requires fertilisers regularly. Fermented solution of leaf powder, bone manure, groundnut cake and neem cake can be diluted and applied fortnightly. Also diluted solution of rock phosphate can be applied fortnightly.
Organic fertiliser granules also is useful. The leaves of plants grown in hanging pots should be slightly sprayed with water. Both excess watering and lack of moisture can harm the plant.
The plant blooms well during summer and winter. Flowers emerge less during monsoon. Saplings of the plant is available in nurseries.
Goldfish plant can be grown as indoor and outdoor plant in the climate of Kerala. Saplings grown in covers filled with potting mix can be sold for earning.
