Farmer turns 50-cent land into sunflower field in Attappadi; plans to expand farming
Agali (Palakkad): A sunflower field at Kunnanchala in Attappadi here is in full bloom giving a visual treat for the passersby. The 50-cent field is owned by Palanisamy Gounder. Many tourists keep coming to the sunflower field to watch the flowers.
Sunflower was cultivated by sowing 2.5 kilograms of seed in 50 cent-land. Upto 150 kilograms of oilseed can be harvested from here and 60 litre oil can be extracted from the seeds. However, there is no facility to extract the oil from seeds. The farmers have to go to Coimbatore for this.
Palanisamy Gounder used to grow sunflower about 20 years ago. Other farmers also cultivated the crop then. There was an oil mill in Goolikadavu during that period. However, it stopped functioning after many farmers stopped sunflower farming.
Palanisamy Gounder said that sunflower cultivation is profitable and is planning to expand farming to more areas. In his opinion, the barren land in Attappadi can be converted into beautiful sunflower fields, if Krishi Bhavan offered help to the farmers.
