Banana passionfruit from Latin America flourishes in Kollam
Anchal (Kollam): Banana passionfruit, a rare fruit usually found in Latin American countries, is suitable for Kerala also. The fruit plant flourished on the compound of Cashew Development Corporation Chairman S. Jayamohan’s residence at Nediyara here.
Banana passionfruit is scientifically named as Passiflora tarminiana. It is rarely seen in Kerala. The fruit is larger than local ash gourd varieties. Banana passionfruits growing in bunches on the vine is an attractive sight.
Jayamohan is in a habit of collecting seeds and saplings of different varieties of plants when he travels to various places. His wife Bindu sows the seeds and takes care of the plants in the courtyard and garden. They have many different plants in their compound.
Banana passionfruit seeds also was collected and grown this way. When ripe fruits are cut, it smells like ordinary passionfruit and the seeds also are similar. This plant is cultivated in the tropical regions and high lands of Latin America.
