Farmers worried over rare disease on areca nut trees in Kasaragod
Kasaragod: Areca nut farmers are facing a crisis as the areca inflorescence on many trees are getting damaged in all farms. It is reported that areca nut farms in Bedadka, Kuttikol and Alatty in Sullia are facing this problem.
The farmers are worried as they are facing such a problem for the first time.
It is reported that the areca nut inflorescence gets rotten and damaged. Within a few days, it turns completely black.
In the initial days of monsoon, the inflorescence of areca nut is found withered. Within a few days, this rare disease spreads to all trees. As the inflorescence, which turns as areca nuts are damaged in the early phase, farmers find areca nut farming no more profitable.
Four to six bunches of inflorescence are found damaged in each tree. According to farmers, new trees are also affected by the disease.
In the last two years also, areca nut farmers faced a huge loss due to drought, rain and Mahali or fruit rot disease. This year, the farmers were hoping to get a better harvest after receiving good summer rain.
