Vet hospitals crowded with ‘patients’ as pet rearing increased during pandemic
Kozhikode: The number of ‘patients’ at veterinary hospitals is on the rise as more people have started keeping pets during the pandemic period. Over 10 lakh cases were reported in a year.
According to the reports of the Animal Husbandry Department, 66.34 lakh cases related to pet health were reported in 2019-20 but it increased to 77.42 lakhs in 2020-21. Since the number of pets admitted in the hospitals increased, the service of veterinary specialists in the cattle rearing sector has declined. The dairy farmers have to wait for hours in the clinics with their cattle.
The availability of doctors and other staff in the Animal Husbandry Department has not improved since 1960. Only one doctor is available in every block or panchayat. The doctors have to handle all the files and documents regarding the project as there are no clerks in panchayat.
Doctors stated that the duty of veterinary doctors is clinical and not non-clinical, hence revisions are crucial. The treatment related duties alone should be given to the clinical sections and all the clerical activities should be handed over to the non-clinical section.
