Poultry feed reaches Kerala from Tamil Nadu; Truck rent hiked by Rs 16,000
Ponkunnam: Ever since the lockdown was declared, the supply of chicken feed had been stopped. In most of the poultry farms, the existing stock too got exhausted. It was in this situation, the farmers decided to bring poultry feed from Tamil Nadu even if it costs them an increased vehicle rent.
The load from Erode in Tamil Nadu reached Ponkunnam on Sunday. Though earlier the lorry rent was Rs 22,000, it increased by Rs 16,000 this time. Farmers had to shell out Rs 38,000 as demanded by the drivers because they will have to return empty.
However, farmers are happy that they could get the feed. Last week, around two lakhs of chicks died at poultry farms in Ponkumman, Koorali, Erattupetta, Kanjirappally, Pinnakkanadu, Thidanadu and Mundakkayam areas.
Even by feeding them with food other than poultry feed, they won’t survive. Also the poultry feed made with mixing nutritious ingredients, especially made in Tamil Nadu, have become expensive. The price was increased by Rs 3 per kilo since lockdown, says farmers.
