Aping the trend in Western countries, we too have started rearing different pets. Rabbits and squirrels are very commonly found pets in households but not mice. But here is a small mouse-like rodent house pet which conquers hearts of youth due to its cute look. Hamster is the new addition to the list of variety pets.
Hamster looks like a tiny mouse but is more attractive and fluffier. One can hold it in their palm. A pair of hamsters costs upto Rs 1000. Normally, hamsters live in cold regions. It cannot bear overheat and so it rarely goes out during day hours.
Though hamsters eat whatever humans have, their favourite feed is seeds, lentils and vegetables. They gobble up food in seconds and store it in cheeks to eat later. Once they reach their burrows, they take the stored food out and eat peacefully.

Hamsters befriend humans quickly and weighs only 25 grams. There are Russian hamsters also which grows double size of other varieties. An 8-month-old hamster gives birth to babies within 28 days. Flat dwellers prefer hamsters as pets as they are so tiny. Hamsters are kept in cages after spreading wood shavings in the base.
