Thiruvananthapuram: The Department of Animal Husbandry stated that the people need not worry about bird flu and that chicken and eggs are safe to consume after cooking well. Raw egg and uncooked meat should be avoided.

After handling raw meat and egg, people have to wash their hands thoroughly using soap. Bird flu can be transmitted to humans under certain circumstances.

The virus is capable of surviving in cold weather for many months. However, it can be destroyed by keeping it in 60-degree Celsius for 30 minutes.

While touching dead or sick birds, migratory birds and bird droppings, people have to wear gloves and mask. They have to wash hands thoroughly after coming in contact with birds or bird droppings.

The authorities have taken actions to cull all birds in one kilometre area around the place where the disease was confirmed and burn or bury them safely.
