Kottayam: Kallara Perumthuruth native Alice Joseph won the award for the best district-level Aquacultural Promoter. She works as promoter at the Kallara and Kaduthuruthy panchayats.
Alice leads the aquaculture farming right from encouraging farmers to helping them find places for the farming activities. She even founded a Fish club with almost 73 members for this purpose and have also instituted training programmes for them.
The fish varieties catla, rohu, mrigal carp, Cyprinus carpio or common carp, Assam vala and GIFT tilapia are distributed among the farmers.
The fish is brought from other districts, including Thrissur and Palakkad, via the Department of Fisheries as per demand.
Alice is a former member of the Kallara panchayat. She gives all credit for her success to her husband John Joseph, also a former panchayat member and her younger son Albin, who helps her in all ventures.
The award was distributed on Tuesday in an event conducted in Kollam.
