American Silkie priced Rs 4000 for pair and more; Ornamental poultry trends
Pathanamthitta: Mallappalli native Saji Abraham earns a good profit from ornamental poultry farming. He grows more than 16 ornamental fowl varieties including some foreign breeds. He keeps the fowls in a specially built cage close to his house.
Among the fowls, the most attractive one is American Silkie that worth Rs 4000 for a pair. Saji keeps Frizzle, Onagadori, Polish Cap, Bantam and other breeds also. He distributes the fowls through WhatsApp groups. Many people from inside and outside Kerala arrive to buy the ornamental fowls.
The most important part of the ornamental poultry farming is regular care and maintenance. The fowls should be taken care in morning and evening every day. They are likely to be affected with more than 50 diseases. Saji said that poultry farming can be maintains well, if the diseases are identified at the right time and the fowls are provided with effective treatment.
Saji also grows Black Meat Chicken (B.M.C.) breed in addition to the ornamental breeds. The only problem is that the government provide no financial assistance to ornamental poultry farming. If the state government provided financial aid to ornamental poultry farmers as in other states, more people are likely to come forward to this sector. Saji has full support from his family.
