African Boer is a breed of goat that is becoming popular among the cattle farmers here. The major feature of Boer is that it gains weight according to the feed given. A one-year-old male goat weighs about 80 kilograms and female goat weighs about 60 kilograms.
Boer goats are white in colour and have brown shade on head. They have high immunity and get friendly with humans. Though they are calm in general, the male goats may behave aggressively if strangers approached it. Grass, fresh leaves and coconut residue are its preferred feed.
Boer goats have two kids at a time. The kids should be fed with mother's milk for upto 2-3 months. Then the milk can be used for other purposes. Boer goats can be grown in households and farms. Air circulation should be ensured in cages.
The waste of feed and droppings should be removed from time to time and the cage should be sanitized. In case the goats are affected with any disease, it is ideal to consult a veterinary doctor rather than self-treatment. Also insuring the goats is useful.
