4 lakh ducks in basket for Easter markets, sellers on lookout for takers
Mankombu: Around 4 lakh ducks were reared in the district with Easter markets in mind. But with lockdown imposed and transportation coming to halt, the sellers are in crisis. Though selling centres are opened at various places and sellers are ready to even dress the ducks, there are no buyers. Authorities have strictly warned that no more than 5 people should assemble in front of shops.
26 shops on AC Road
AC Road is one of the main centre for duck sale. There are 26 shops opened between Kalarkod and Perunna at Kaithavana, Nedumudy, Mankombu, Onnankara and Manaykkachira. Dressed duck costs around Rs 320.
Shops are also opened at Muttar, Karichal and Pallippad areas. Apart from these shops, temporary stalls are set up in rural areas where ducks are sold after buying 100-200 ducks from farmers.
Only 1 percent sale in shops
In the past two days, only two ducks were sold. With Easter market in view, around 7,000 ducks were bought. 3000 died of bacterial infection. 4000 are remaining, said Raju, a seller.
Can be delivered to houses, but need passes
The farmers group are ready to deliver ducks at home through farmers in these regions, said farmers' group joint secretary Kunjumon. But there is no permission to take two or three ducks in small vehicles to houses. It will require pass. Government should intervene in the issue and provide passes.
At present, if order for not less than 200 ducks are obtained, the load is delivered in lorries within and outside the district.
A truck load of 1,200 ducks were sent to Aluva the other day. Those who need ducks can contact at 9446916150, 9495163027.
