13-yr-old boy runs dairy farm after father's demise in Idukki
Idukki: Mathew Benny is only 13 years old, but anyone will get surprised to see his skills in animal husbandry. Along with schooling, the little boy is also successfully managing cattle farming. Mathew is the second son of Velliyamattom native late Benny and Shiny. The dairy farm run by father Benny was taken over by Mathew after father’s demise.
Currently, there are 13 cows in Mathew’s farm. Mathew used to accompany his father to collect fodder for the cows, to rear them and to milk the cows from a very young age. So, he was familiar with dairy farming and the tasks related to it. He wakes up at 4 am to clean the cow shed and bathe the cows. Then he milks the cows and manages other works.
It will be 7 am by the time he completes the chores. After this, Mathew attends online class. After studies, he engages in cow rearing. The neighbours are impressed with Mathew’s ability to identify when the cows fall sick. The livestock inspectors have given him some training in artificial insemination observing his skills in animal husbandry.
Mathew wants to become a veterinary doctor when he grows up. Now he is a class 8 student of Vimala Public School in Vettimattam. His elder brother George and younger sister Rose Mary also offer help to Mathew.
