Idukki: A farmer who tried integrated farming in Attuchal in Idukki is excited to get a stunning yield from his fish pond. Vellasseril Saji has five ponds on his 1-acre plot apart from farming.
Saji had deposited 10,000 fingerlings of Catla, Rohu, tilapia, nutter, gold fish and ribbon fish provided by the fisheries department. Some of the fishes breed easily and grow in large numbers.
The first batch of fish was harvested on the eve of Christmas. Saji could collect 125 kilograms of fish in the first harvest. Saji manages integrated farming without wasting even a little area of land.
Last year, he had received an award worth Rs 50,000 for making most income from a limited area of land. Saji used the entire amount for farming and set a model for all.
