Payyoli (Kozhikode): A cucumber vine that grew on its own yielded 25 cucumbers weighing about 3.5 kg each. The vine spread over half a cent area of land. After finding the vine flourishing well, the staff of Sargaalaya Arts and Crafts Village in Iringal started caring it.
Retired Deputy Director of Agriculture Heera Nettoor said that such large cucumbers do not normally yield on a single vine. About Rs 10,000 worth Kanivellari (golden cucumber / golden melon) were sold in the Vishu farming in Saragaalaya this year. More than 5000 cucumbers were harvested from 600 vines.
Watermelon, spinach, bitter gourd, ash gourd, pumpkin, ridge gourd, bottle gourd and other vegetables cultivated in the craft village also gave high yield. The vegetable farming is managed under the leadership of retired agriculture officer C. Narayanan from Iringal.
