Kayamkulam: A retired teacher is now basking in the glory of his success by winning an award of the agriculture samiti. Vijayan Pillai was awarded for his outstanding contribution to agriculture by the Chetana agriculture samiti, a welfare body of the Mavelikara diocese.

Vijayan Pillai was a teacher working at the NSS High School and retired in 2010. He took up farming which became part of his daily life. Vijayan Pillai owns 90 cents of land and does farming in 80 cents. His farm contains vegetables, bananas, tapioca, papaya, ginger, turmeric, groundnuts among others.
Vijayan Pillai uses only organic manure and organic pesticides. He prepares organic manure from the waste generated from his household. Vijayan spends almost 7 hours a day in his vegetable garden and gets the complete vegetables needed for his household from the farm itself. The rest of the vegetables he sells to Krishi Bhavan.
