Vegetable price skyrockets; Rs 100 for beans, Rs 70 for carrot
Shoranur: After the Vishu festival season, the price of vegetables has skyrocketed. Beans tops the list with its price jumping from Rs 60 to Rs 100 in 10 days. The price of tomato has reached from Rs 30 to Rs 50 and the price of carrot leaped from Rs 50 to Rs 70. People tend to replace fish and meat with vegetables during summer and are affected with the price hike.
Though there are attempts to maintain kitchen gardens in households, it has not reduced the rush in vegetable markets. Vegetables are supplied to Palakkad which is located close to Tamil Nadu border from villages like Oddanchatram. Also, vegetables are supplied from Mysuru. The price of beans, tomato and carrot had a considerable leap in the past 10 days.
Earlier, the wholesale dealers in every region used to bring vegetables in lorries. However, the dealers of 3-4 regions bring only a single load of vegetables due to the price hike and other crises. With the price increasing, many merchants have reduced selling beans and other vegetables. They opined that the demand for these items also has gone down.
