Vegetable, fruit cultivation begins in Munnar plantations
Munnar (Idukki): Even before the government announced their policy that fruits can be cultivated in plantations, the farmers in Munnar have started it.
Various types of vegetables and fruits are cultivated near the shelter homes of the labourers. Majority of them sell the surplus produce in the market for an additional income. Carrot, beans, cabbage, potato, cauliflower, spinach, coriander, beetroot, radish, strawberry, butter fruit, guava, tree tomato and many varieties of vegetables and fruits are growing here.
As the crops are cultivated in purely organic method using only cow dung as fertilizer, the produce from the estate has high demand in the market. Apart from the labourers, plantation owners also grow orange and strawberry in tea estates. Though smaller in size, the oranges and strawberries growing in Munnar are tastier than other varieties.
