This is the sweetest variety of jackfruit
Kasaragod: After three years of research, a group of students of Padannakkad Government Agricultural College in Neeleswaram have found the sweetest variety of jackfruit in Kerala. They identified the jackfruit variety known as ‘Chirappuram Cluster Jack’ after researching about more than 400 types of jackfruits in various parts of Kasaragod district.
‘Chirappuram Cluster Jack’ is the sweetest variety of firm fleshed jackfruit (varikka chakka) identified till date, said the PG students of horticulture department in the college who headed the research. The new jackfruit has 32-degree brix sugar content.
‘Singapore varikka’ and ‘Muttan varikka’ were considered as the sweetest jackfruits till now. But ‘Chirappuram Cluster Jack’ is sweeter than the two according to the research team. They found the new variety on the compound of Neeleswaram native Noble Joseph.
The major characteristic of ‘Chirappuram Cluster Jack’ is its small sized fruits. One fruit weighs upto 2.5 kg only. One bunch contains upto 6-8 jackfruits. About 40 fruits can be seen in one jackfruit. One tree produces upto 350 jackfruits a year. It also bears fruit every year without break.
The basic findings of the research have been handed over to the Zonal Research and Extension Advisory Council. Once the council approves the findings, the jackfruit will be given a new name and saplings will be produced in the college farm through budding.
