Alpha Rajesh, a class 4 student of Nedumkunnam St. Johns School, planted a jackfruit sapling in a grow bag on the backyard one and a half year ago. Never did she imagine that the little tree would bear fruits in such a short time but it really happened.
Alpha is the daughter of Kottayam Manthuruthy native Rajesh who is a farmer. Rajesh got the Vietnam Jackfruit sapling from a friend in Pallikkathodu one and a half years ago. But he could not plant it due to lack of time. Thus Alpha decided to try her hand in farming and planted the sapling in a grow bag on a holiday.
Alpha filled the grow bag with soil and cow dung powder and planted the jackfruit sapling in it. She only watered the plant in morning and evening every day and no other care was provided.
The sapling grew up to a height of 1.5 feet in one year and bore four small fruits this year. As the fruits began to gain weight, the trunk and branches of the little jackfruit tree has started stooping down.
Many a people keep visiting Alpha’s house to see the little jackfruit tree bearing fruit in the grow bag. However, Alpha does not know the secret behind the early fruit bearing of jackfruit tree. Normally, this variety of jackfruit bears fruit after 3-4 years of planting.
