Rubber farmers switch to papaya tapping for better earnings
The highland farmers who searched for an alternative after the immense price drop of rubber, have finally taken refuge in papaya tapping. Those who have attempted the new method claim that a profit of more than Rs 3 lakh per year can be earned from papaya cultivation on one acre land.
Papaya sap is used for manufacturing medicines, cosmetics and food items including juices. The rubber farmers started trying alternative crops after the price drop of rubber caused them huge loss. The model project was implemented in Thiruvaly panchayat in Malappuram under Swadeshi Science Movement.
Nine farmers are cultivating papaya on 11.5 acre land at various places in the panchayat for tapping. Papaya tree is tapped and the sap collected in a plastic sheet spread below. Upto 200-300 ml sap can be collected from a papaya tree.
