Anchal (Kollam): The price for jackffruit, the official fruit of Kerala, has reached its peak during the off season. According to vendors, 1 kg jackfruit costs Rs 50. The price of a jackfruit varies between Rs 250 and Rs 1000.
‘Varikkachakka’, one of the varieities that has the highest demand, get the best rate. Street vendors located between Ayoor and Kottarakkara stunned Keralites with the whopping price of jackfruits.
The weight of one fruit varies from 5 kg to 20 kg. The price for ripe fruit is even higher. The fruits are brought down from the top of trees using ropes to avoid damage by hitting on ground. It costs extra wage for labourers to climb on the tree. This is the reason for the rise in price, the vendors said.
However, when people from Tamil Nadu take the fruit directly from the tree, it costs between Rs 5 and Rs 10 per fruit.
