Nedumangad (Thiruvananthapuram): Though the school is empty at present, the red banana tree nurtured by the students bore fruit finally, that too in double shades. The fruits on the top layers are in green colour and the ones on bottom layers are red as usual.
The rare banana was seen in the garden of Christu Jyothi School in Chullimanoor. The bunch of banana seems to have equally parted into two with different colours. There are equal number of bananas in both colours. The people are confused if the banana is a mix of two varieties.
Anad agriculture officer S Jayakumar said that genetic mutilation is the reason behind the double coloured banana. However, the saplings of the banana tree is unlikely to develop the same feature.
School manager Alphonse Ligori and principal Sister Manju are disappointed that the students who nurtured the banana tree are not present at the school to witness the rare variety of bananas.
