Mettupalayam: The price of Nilgiri potato rose due to low production. The price touched Rs 1300-1500 per sack which contains upto 45 kilograms. Earlier, the price was about Rs 650-750 per sack. Potato was sold for Rs 2000 per sack on Monday, said Ooty-based farmer Rangaswamy.
Merchants give Rs 1600-2000 based on the category of potato. Farmers said that the low production resulted in price hike. As production of Mettupalayam potato dropped, only 15 loads of Nilgiri potato was delivered on Monday. In normal seasons, upto 80 loads of potato are delivered to the market.
Merchants said that potato season commenced at Dhimbam on Tamil Nadu-Karnataka border. A total of 70 load was brought from Dhimbam and Gujarat. The potato brought from Dhimbam and Hassan fetches Rs 1400-1600 and Gujarat potato gets Rs 1250-1350.
Nilgiri potato gets upto Rs 900 during seasons. Nilgiri potatoes have huge demand as they have a longer shelf life. People also complain that the price of vegetable is generally high these days. As this is festival season in Tamil Nadu temples, vegetable price has gone up.
G Prakash, a farmer from Ooty, said that they get high price currently due to low production. After a long break, the workers who categorize potatoes also got some work. Many auction centres in the area were closed or relocated due to COVID outbreak.
