Price of cattle and poultry feed skyrocket; farmers urge govt intervention
Kalpetta: Farmers involved in cattle rearing and poultry farming in the state are troubled by the skyrocketing prices of cattle and poultry feed. Small scale farmers are worried and many have already quit the occupation due to financial crisis.
For the past three months, the price of a sack of poultry feed is at Rs 2,000. Notably, last year the price was only Rs 1500. Burdened by high prices, poultry farmers are looking for alternatives. Expecting a decrease in feed price, farmers urge the government to intervene. At present they are relying on Tamil Nadu for feed. Farmers demand that like the base price for chicken is fixed, the base price of poultry feed and chicks also must be fixed.
Dairy farmers are also going through a similar ordeal. At present, price of one sack cattle feed is at Rs 1,400. Within three months, cattle feed price witnessed a rise of Rs 200. The fodder prices are also high. Most of the farmers need to rely on cattle hay coming from Tamil Nadu. For one load of hay it will cost around Rs 50,000. Apart from the cost, the revenue from milk is diminishing. The milk societies are taking one litre milk at a price of Rs 35. However, they sell it for Rs 46/litre. Due to this profit of dairy farmers too declined.
