Kochi: With Onam round the corner, the price of raw banana skyrocketed. Raw banana price was only Rs 20-25 a month ago and it has escalated to Rs 48 now. The retail markets charge Rs 50-60 per kg.
Wayanadan raw banana is the lowest priced one with Rs 40-42 for raw and Rs 50-55 for ripe banana. Mettupalayam banana costs Rs 60. The price will go up again during Onam.
Raw banana is an essential ingredient for Onam special delicacies like banana chips, jaggery chips, Aviyal etc. The high demand is the reason for escalating price, according to merchants. Chips shop owners buy upto 4 tonnes of raw banana every day, said a merchant at Maradu in Ernakulam.
The price of ripe njalipoovan banana is Rs 76-80 per kg. Raw njalipoovan banana costs Rs 72. Poovan banana is priced Rs 60 and Palayamkodan banana costs Rs 45. The price varies slightly in different shops and areas.
