Now, enjoy tasty jackfruit even during monsoon
Kottiyoor: Jackfruit has a special place in the heart of Malayalees. The vast variety of dishes, their smell, taste, and texture bring back memories of childhood. Unlike yesterday, such good quality jackfruits are very hard to find in the market today. Especially during the monsoon, the water can easily enter the fruit and gradually decreases its taste. It affects the quality of the jackfruit and its demand in the market.
But Pappachan, a farmer in Kottiyoor has founded a rare variant called ‘Athishaya Jack’, to solve this issue. He planted this variant of jackfruit 26 years ago. Initially, he never had the idea that it was a unique variant. The fruits were also plentiful. The tree bears fruit between April and November instead of a normal reaping season of January to July. Additionally, the outer layer of the fruit is thicker than the normal ones, which minimizes the amount of water that enters the fruit.
Later, Papchan started marketing the saplings, with the help of Thankachan, who also had prior experience handling various jackfruit variants. The saplings are produced as grafts and buds. The initiative also became a huge success, and more people flocked to his nursery to buy the saplings.
