Nagaroor: Paddy fields in Nagaroor panchayat has been harvest ready for weeks. However, the unavailability of paddy harvesting machines has put the farmers in distress. The attempts by farmers to bring machines from other places were in vain.
Though it was reported to the panchayat and agriculture department, there was no response from the authorities. Nagaroor panchayat has no harvesting machine of its own. They hire machines from other places. Even the rent of the machine is paid by farmers.
This season, paddy has been ready for harvesting weeks before since weeks. Harvesting the fields manually will cost huge expense. This compels the farmers to wait for the machines.
Meanwhile, the agriculture department has distributed seeds and fertilizers for the next season of cultivation. However, without harvesting the paddy fields, next cultivation cannot be done.
Even if the paddy is harvested, the field has to be prepared before sowing the seeds. This is likely to be delayed in the present condition. Farmers fear that if seeds are not sowed before the end of monsoon, the next cultivation would be destroyed.
However, the Nagaroor panchayat president M Raghu said that the machines will reach within two days. The machines are in use in other paddy fields which is causing the delay, he explained.
