Ambalavayal: The mini pumpkins grown at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Ambalavayal has generated tourist interest. The native place of these pumpkins, which are known as ornamental vegetables, is Singapore. Four varieties of Pumpkins belonging to the cucumber family are grown here. This pumpkin is used only as a showpiece.
The center director Dr P Rajendran brought the ornamental pumpkin to the centre by paying Rs 500 per gram for the seeds. The pumpkin plants were tended with great care inside the Polyhouse so as to bear fruit. The variety which are seen only in foreign counties amuse tourists. A fully grown ornamental pumpkin will weigh no more than 100 kg.
