Lockdown crisis: Light and sound workers cultivate Chinese potato for a living
Changaramkulam (Malappuram): As nobody wants light and sound settings during the silent days in COVID lockdown, Ashraf and Akbar were struggling to make the ends meet. Without waiting for the lockdown to end, they came forward to toil in the soil and find a new source of income.
Chamayam Ashraf has been working in light and sound contracting industry for many years and Akbar is an electrician. As programmes with huge participation are banned due to COVID related restrictions, they lost their means of income. Following this, the duo decided to start farming as a livelihood.
Ashraf and Akbar cultivated Chinese potato in 3.5 acres of land at Valayamkulam in Malappuram and Chalissery in Palakkad. They also formed a farmers community named Chamayam Farming Group for promoting agriculture.
Family members of Ashraf and Akbar also support them in the new career and help with the chores in the farm. Though farming was started for surviving during the lockdown, it gives a lot of happiness and peace of mind, said Ashraf and Akbar.
