Thenmala (Kollam): The price of lemons soar as the scorching summer heat burns the people. As the passers-by and drivers depend on lemonades and lime juice to beat the heat, street stalls have mushroomed along the wayside.
The price of lemon brought from Tamil Nadu has shot up in the summer. Lemon costs about Rs 100 per kg. The price was Rs 40 before the summer. Small lemons cost Rs 80 while the larger ones are priced Rs 90.
The vendors opined that the price will increase even more, if the heat intensifies. Pavoorsathram and Churanda markets in Tamil Nadu are the major source of lemon. There are many lemon orchards in Pavoorsathram, Kadayam and Puliyankudy areas.
The wholesale dealers bring lemons from the orchards. On Friday, price of lemon was Rs 70 per kg in Pavoorsathram market. The small scale vendors bring the lemons to Ariyankavu, Thenmala and Punalur areas in two wheelers.
