Being one of the most loved fruits in Kerala, a bunch of bananas is unlikely to attract much attention as it is very common here. But people are rushing to the residence of Kuniyan Padinjarekkara native Chandran to see a ‘weird’ bunch of banana in which red (Chenkadali) and green (Robusta) bananas have yielded on the same bunch!
Chandran planted a sapling of the red banana (Chenkadali) a few months ago. The four feet long bunch carries red Chenkadali bananas on one half and green Robusta bananas on the other half. The stem of the bunch is half red and half green in colour; Red on the Chenkadali side and green on the Robusta side.
Chandran has been cultivating red banana for the last 22 years. He bought the sapling when he went for a tour to Thiruvananthapuram while working as a beedi maker. After that, bunches of red bananas were a common sight at his compound. But this is the first time Chandran saw red and green bananas on the same plant.
