The giant leaf that was commonly found in Andaman – Nicobar Islands will be part of the flora of Kerala as well. The giant leaf, scientifically named as Macaranga nicobarica, was brought from the Nicobar Islands and planted in Thrissur Vellanikkara campus of the National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources under the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.
Head of the institution and scientist K. Joseph John said that the plant was brought here as an alternative to the use of plastic in Kerala. The plant is also suitable for the climate of the state. The giant leaf was brought here two years ago after visiting the islands many times.
Macaranga nicobarica is similar to the Macaranga peltata plant which is known as Vattayila in Malayalam. However, the giant leaf has a length 65 cm and a width of 60 cm. The plant can be planted for shade.
