Fisherfolk dejected as 'Kilimeen' gives shocking surprise
Ponnani (Malappuram): Though the fisherfolk expected a huge collection for squid and prawns in the fishing net, what they got was pink perch (Kilimeen) from the sea. A basket full of pink perch fetched Rs 2500-3500 the other day, but this reduced to Rs 1800-2000 by Friday. The abundance of fish resulted in the price drop.
The fishing boats ventured into the sea on Wednesday midnight after 66 days of waiting. They were expecting export fish after the trawling ban. Squid and similar fish could have ended their crisis during the COVID times. Though the boats reached Ponnani harbour by Friday morning itself, they did not get a fair price as they could catch only pink perch.
As the wholesale markets in Malappuram and nearby districts are closed due to COVID, the fisherfolk could not expect much. They had to sell the fish for a pre-determined price. Only large fish can be exported and bring profit to the fisherfolk. So, they are expecting a good catch in the coming days.
