Malappuram: Farmers are facing a major setback post-floods. The wide insect attack in farm lands have put the farmers in difficult times. The ‘Pattala puzhu’ or Spodoptera frugiperda was found destroying plants.
It generally eats plants of tapioca, banana, gram and okra. This insect cannot bear extreme heat and sunlight so it stays under the soil during the day and comes out at night.
It even eats the new shoots destroying the whole plant.
The farmers said that the insect attacks have been experienced earlier also but it was found in excess this year post-floods. In Kodoor, large areas of fields were attacked by the insect.
How to prevent the attack
Stagnate water surrounding the fields where the insects haven’t invaded. Sprinkle chlorantraniliprole fertilizer mixed with water in the fields where the insect attack is immense. If the farming hasn’t been started, then sprinkle a mixture of kerosene and soap, said Kodoor Krishi Bhavan Agriculture Officer PP Shahanila
