Edible bamboo varieties soon to be popular in state
Thrissur: Edible bamboo varieties are soon going to be popular in Kerala. Tender bamboo stems can be used for making various delicacies like pickle, soup, curry, steamed cake etc. The Forestry College of the Kerala Agricultural University is preparing an orchard of the edible varieties of bamboo. They also distribute bamboo saplings.
Eight top quality varieties of bamboo are growing in the orchard. Among them, the most notable one is sweet bamboo. 100 grams of sweet bamboo contains 5.42 grams of carbohydrate, 0.5 grams of fat and various vitamins. The phytochemicals in bamboo is effective to fight bacteria and virus. Also the potassium in it is good for heart patients.
Rawami, Rupai and Burma are the mostly used edible varieties of bamboo. All of them are planted in the orchard. Vegetal, Bengal, female and green varieties also are growing there. The tender sprouts emerging from the bottom of bamboo is used as food. It is cut and boiled in water and drained before cooking.
