Apple price nosedives to less than Rs 20 per kg due to surplus production
Coimbatore: The price of local apple nosedived after increase in production. The price of apple was Rs 60 per kilogram last month and now it has dropped to less than Rs 20 per kilogram.
Apple cultivated in the villages of Tamil Nadu is brought to Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Puducherry and Kerala, said V Keshavan, a farmer. Salem, Krishnagiri, Coimbatore, Ooty, Thiruvannamala and Kanyakumari are the major places where apple is cultivated.
Majority of the farmers use high-yielding apple varieties. Two years ago, apple price had increased to above Rs 60 per kilogram. Normally, apples are sold for Rs 1300 for 52-kilogram box and Rs 1500 for 60-kilogram box in the market. However, this has dropped to Rs 350 and Rs 500 respectively, said a merchant.
