Kochi: In a big boost to the tourism industry in the state, a new world-class cruise terminal will come up in Kochi at a cost of Rs 25.7 crore.

The new terminal is expected to compensate for the limited facilities in the existing cruise terminal Samudrika. The new facility will come up on 2252 square feet area.

A tender has been invited for the project, which will be implemented with the support of the Central Government. The new terminal is planned adjacent to Q 7 and 8 berths at Ernakulam wharf.

On average, over 2000 passengers arrive in Kochi in 260-metre-long cruise ships which dock in Samudrika. Often, luxury liners have had to anchor at Ernakulam wharf and the tourists need to come to Samudrika for completing statutory clearances like Customs and Immigration.

Once the new terminal becomes a reality, tourists will be able to complete the procedures then and there and went on to visit their destinations in Kochi and other places in Kerala.
