Pala (Kottayam): The 61st School Athletics Meet which kicked off today with two national record-breaking performances, saw Ernakulam leading the points table with 50 points and bagging 7 golds at the end of the first day. Palakkad is close behind with 32 points and Thiruvananthapuram comes third.

The 61st School Athletics Meet kicked off with two national record-breaking performances. The event, that opened with Palakkad bagging the first gold, also set a meet record.

Taking out their record-breaking performances, P N Ajith of Parali High School emerged winner of the 5000-metre race (senior) and Anumol Thampi from Ernakulam won gold in the 3000 metre race (senior).

School Athletics Meet

Ajith’s record finish was in 14:48.40 seconds. Anumol finished in 9:50.89 seconds, breaking the national record set by Kerala’s Shameena Jabbar in 2006.

The first meet record was set by K M Sreekanth of Maneedu in junior boys’ long jump.

After seven finals were completed, Ernakulam is leading with 23 points. Palakkad came second with 16 points. District-level points: Thiruvananthapuram (10), Kozhikode (9), Kottayam (3), Pathanamthitta (1) and Alappuzha (1).
