Munnar:  A van driver, who lost control on seeing a herd of wild elephants, crashed the vehicle thereby injuring himself. Kannur native Allukkal George Joseph (35) sustained injuries and his friend Ashraf escaped unhurt. The herd of wild elephants destroyed a shop too.

The incident happened on Saturday at 11.30 pm when the van reached old Munnar to transport some interior items and was returning. A herd of elephants blocked the vehicle at the Blossom park at Old Munnar.

The driver was taken aback when all of a sudden five elephants appeared with their calves in front of the vehicle. The vehicle lost control and hit the roadside bumper and overturned. The two people who were in the van ran out of the vehicle and were rescued by passengers of another vehicle who took them to hospital.

After this incident, the herd damaged a roadside shop, belonging to Santi, a native of Old Munnar.  After relishing on the carrot and pineapple inside the shop, the herd left the place early morning.  For the past 4 days, the herd was on an attacking spree at Nalla Thanni, GH Quarters and Thadayar regions. After the herd damaged a bike and a car, it destroyed the farm and the shed of a few houses.
