Rebirth for ‘Kireedam’ Bridge, to become memorial for actor Thilakan
Vellayani: A collective of cultural leaders at Vellayani in Thiruvananthapuram district has decided to preserve the ‘Kireedam’ bridge on Kannukalichal for the fond memories of a popular movie.
This small bridge shot to fame in 1989 with the release of the Mohanlal-starrer 'Kireedam’. Some scenes of the movie were filmed on this bridge. Since then, it got the name 'Kireedam Paalam.'
Mathrubhumi Nagaram had earlier reported about the pathetic state of the bridge. A group of cultural activist led by Shantivila Padmakumar came forward to protect the bridge and even made a human chain along the bridge, seeking intervention of the government authorities.
M Vincent MLA has announced fund for the repair works of the bridge. The renovated bridge will be made a memorial of actor Thilakan, who essayed the role of Mohanlal’s father in the movie. A hut has been set up next to the bridge for bird watchers and travellers.
The small bridge, the commission noted, is an important lifeline for the residents of Punchakkari, Vandithadam and Melangode.
