Thiruvananthapuram:  The American leopard at the Thiruvananthapuram zoo, which is the last surviving American leopard at the zoo, died on Sunday morning. She was 24 years old and was named Sangita.

Sangita was lodged in a special cage as she was ailing for some time, having lost her vision, and was kept near the veterinary hospital. Zoo officials said the leopard died due to old age and the average age of American leopards are 23 years.

Authorities of the zoo said that as part of bringing in new animals to the zoo, 2 white lions will be brought from Africa, giraffes, hyenas and a pair of American leopards will also find their way to the zoo this year.

It was in 2003 that the American leopard Sangita was brought to the zoo from Hyderabad. Another American leopard Salman which was Sangita’s companion, was shifted to the Delhi National Zoological Park 2 years back. But zoo officials said that also died due to ailments a few months back.
