Elephant statue worth Rs 1 cr steals limelight at crafts fest at Payyoli
Payyoli: An elephant statue worth Rs 1 crore was the main attraction at the 7th edition International Arts and Crafts Festival organised by the Sargaalaya Kerala Arts and Crafts Village, Iringal.
It is said that this statue is the biggest of its kind crafted in wood. This unique craft work is the masterpiece of sculptor Kalarikkal Vatsalan of Cherpu in Thrissur.
Christened as Manikantan by Vatsalan, this statue is made in a single piece of wood. With a height of 6.25 feet, it weights 2 tons.
After the statue was brought to the fest, Vatsalan was not able to work peacefully. Without anyone noticing, he had come to the feast just to see his statue.
The statue is the effort of 20 years of work. It was completed five years back and was exhibited at the Kochi Binale.
Vatsalan has been honoured by the Tamil Nadu government with the Victoria Technical Institute award.
