Balaramapuram: At the age of 70, Sreedharankutty Nair did something different; he simply threw the javelin and hit the record. Kottukal Valavunada native Sreedharankutty represented India in the 20th Asia Masters Athletics Championships 2017 held in China and bagged gold in javelin throw in senior citizen’s category.

Sreedharankutty, the former physical education teacher in Naruvamood Krishnapuram KPM High School, had also secured silver medal in last year’s championship held in Singapore. He had taken part in several national level competitions and won prizes, after his retirement in 2002. His continuous efforts since 2005, finally bore fruit in 2017. Though he had got a chance to participate in the 2014 championship held in Brazil, he could not utilize it due to financial difficulties.

He took part in several international level competitions in the past two years, despite the financial crisis, and the debts are yet to be cleared. Even after securing medals and achievements, the government has not offered any help till date, said Sreedharankutty. His wife Ramadevi is a former school teacher.
