Sabarimala to be ‘Sree Dharma Sastha Temple’ again
Pathanamthitta: The name of the renowned Sabarimala temple will be changed to its previous name ‘Sree Dharma Sastha’ Temple. The meeting of Travancore Devaswom Board to be convened tomorrow will take a decision regarding this. The name of the temple was changed to ‘Ayyappa Swamy’ temple during the last pilgrimage season.
The decision of name change was taken by the then administrative committee headed by Prayar Gopalakrishnan. The board decided to change the name of the temple to oppose the argument put forward by the Left government in Supreme Court with regard to the women’s entry into the temple.
The name change was with an intention to support the view that the Dharma Sastha Temples anywhere in the world allow women’s entry in the temple but not in Sabarimala as it is the only Ayyappa Swamy temple. However, with the temple retaining its old name, the new Devaswom Board seems to be in favour of the government stand in the issue.
