Thrissur:  The special fare train from Ernakulam to Rameshwaram which will begin service on Sunday will have a uniform ticketing price from all stations. The weekly train will run through the pilgrim centres of Palani, Madurai, Ervadi and Rameshwaram and though the passengers were looking forward to this train, the uniform pricing of fares have put them in a spot.  Passengers have to shell out the same amount for ticket from Thrissur to Rameshwaram or from Palakkad or Ernakulam to Rameshwaram.

The fares from Ernakulam-Rameshwaram 2-tier AC - Rs 1585, 3-tier - Rs 1120 and Sleeper class - Rs 405.  Passengers who book a ticket from Thrissur will have to pay Rs 1410, Rs 1025 and Rs 375.  The fare that is calculated for 500 kms have to be given even for a minimum distance.

Passengers from pilgrim centres of Palani and Eravadi would be benefitted by this special train which was a long-term need of the people of the area. The new train was announced after the route on Palakkad-Pollachi was made broad gauge.

As the special train charges a high fare, passengers have also raised a demand to run an ordinary train on the route. A train linking Pollachi is a great demand put forth by many traders. Though the special train comes with a high fare, many passengers have booked their tickets before Saturday itself.

The train will begin its journey from Ernakulam on Sunday evening without touching Shoranur and go via Palakkad, Pollachi, Udumalaipettai, Palani, Maanamadura, Ramanathapuram before reaching Rameshwaram on Monday early morning.

The return train will start from Rameshwaram at night 10’o clock and will reach Ernakulam the next day at about 10.15 am, covering a distance of 558 kms. Passengers from Thiruvananthapuram will only have to cover half the distance to Rameshwaram.
