Thiruvananthapuram: State Ministers Kadakampally Surendran and J Mercykutty Amma, who accompanied Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to cyclone-hit Poonthura, faced the protest of fisherfolk in the coastal village.

Expressing their anger over alleged delay in issuing cyclone warning and ‘tardy’ rescue operations, the fishermen said they will not allow any Ministers to enter their region.

Even when Sitharaman started to speak, they continued to raise protest slogans against the state ministers. The fishermen alleged lapse on the part of Coast Guard and also said that the authorities had failed to intervention on time.

Following repeated request from Sitharaman, they kept calm for some time. She spoke for around 15 minutes.

The Defence Minister also visited Vizhinjam earlier today. Speaking at Vizhinjam, she said the rescue operations will continue till the last person stranded in the waters is rescued.

Earlier today, she attended a review meeting to take stock of the rescue operations.
