Palakkad: Responding to the Malappuram bypoll results, BJP state President Kummanam Rajasekharan said the party did not suffer a ‘big defeat’ in Malappuram.

He said the party’s candidate was not weak and there were no lapses in selecting the candidate. Kummanam was in Palakkad to participate in the core committee meeting.

“All our party leaders worked in unison during electioneering. Malappuram is not a stronghold of BJP. Though the party could not put up a big show there, the number of BJP votes have increased,” he said.

Affirming that there is no divide within the party over its candidate, Kummanam alleged that the gains made by the UDF and the LDF are garnered through communal polarisation.

Commenting on the election results, O Rajagopal MLA said that no miracles have happened in Malappuram. In Kerala, where anti-Modi sentiment is very strong, everyone worked for Muslim League and claimed that they are secular, he added.
