Munnar: A giant rock fell on vehicles parked near the Pallivasal tunnel from a height of 2000 feet, destroying three vehicles. Meanwhile, the drivers who was sleeping in these vehicles, escaped unhurt.

The incident happened at 11.30 pm on Monday. The vehicles were used to transport tourists to a resort in this area.    

Karimpan-native J Binoy (40), Pattambi-native C V Shemin (30) and Palakkad-native T J Monson had a miraculous escape.

The rock broke loose from above the tunnels which take water to the Pallivasal power house. The rock fell on the vehicles and smashed the protective walls of the resort below.

Just 100 meter away from the accident spot, there is a settlement of labourers.

Revenue Department officials said that illegal construction works and stone quarrying activities are causing damage to the sensitive geographical balance in the area.

Devikulam Sub Collector Sreeram Venkitaram and Tahsildar P K Shaji visited the place.
